Myofunctional Therapy

Have you or a healthcare provided noticed the following in your child?

  • speech issues
  • open bite
  • chewing and swallowing issues
  • mouth breathing
  • sleep disordered breathing
  • teeth grinding
  • TMJ symptoms

Dr. Ghatak is certified in myofunctional therapy.

Myofunctional therapy is a treatment program to train the muscles of the face and mouth needed to eat, speak, breathe, and swallow.

It is used to treat common myofunctional disorders, and it can be used as the primary treatment or in conjunction with other treatments.

Corrected muscle behaviors allow for proper craniofacial development as your child ages, and treatment is usually most effective when started early. However, children of all ages can benefit from myofunctional therapy exercises.

The neuromuscular re-education exercises, like oral physical therapy, provided by Merrifield Pediatric Dentistry aim to eliminate negative oral habits, retrain muscle memory and improve the following to support proper growth and development:

proper tongue position

lip seal

nasal breathing

proper posture

Lactation Support

Tethered oral tissues, commonly called lip and tongue ties, restrict full movement of a baby’s orofacial muscles and can effect a baby’s ability to properly feed and can lead to growth and development issues.

These restrictions often lead to nipple pain, trauma and decreased milk supply for new mothers and difficulty feeding for babies.

Merrifield Pediatric Dentistry provides comprehensive and collaborative breast feeding solutions including infant laser tissue releases to optimize feeding.
